Clinical Applications for
Freeze-Dried Mother's Own Milk

Milkify Medical is advancing a new standard in neonatal nutrition through the safe, precise use of freeze-dried mother's own milk (FDMOM) as individualized fortification. The MOM Fortification Program gives hospitals and care teams a clinically rigorous, customizable tool to extend the protective benefits of human milk.

For Your Team

Clinical Details

Milkify Medical clinical guide

Making informed decisions about using FDMOM for fortification requires more than a general overview. That's why we've developed a comprehensive clinical guide covering everything your team needs to evaluate and implement the MOM Fortification Program with confidence.

The guide includes in-depth information on:

  • Macronutrients
  • Vitamins & Minerals
  • Osmolality
  • Displacement
  • Protein Considerations

Whether you're building a new protocol or evaluating FDMOM for an individual patient, this guide gives your team the evidence-based foundation to move forward.

How Milkify Works with Your Team

1

Milkify Medical Director consults with the family to understand clinical context, diagnosis, and gestational age. Provider information is collected to ensure transparency and coordination.

2

Milk is sent to Milkify and is processed with SafeDry™ contact-free technology.

3

Baseline (pooled 24-hour collection of fresh milk) and powder samples are analyzed on Miris Human Milk Analyzer.

4

Individualized mixing instructions based on nutritional analysis are generated and shared with medical provider and family. Regular check-ins ensure custom mixing guides remain current and support as new feeding milestones arise.

Patient Profiles: When to Consider

This evidence-based approach particularly benefits providers managing the following patient populations:

Medically Complex Infants

  • Late preterm infants
  • Select surgical infants
  • Others requiring post-discharge nutrition

Infants Facing Certain Conditions

  • Feeding intolerance
  • Cow milk protein allergy
  • Faltering weight

Family Preference

Families with a strong preference for maintaining an all-breast-milk diet under provider guidance may be appropriate candidates for MOM fortification.

Analytics

Macronutrient Analysis

Every sample undergoes quantitative macronutrient profiling. Results are reported in standardized units and directly inform the fortification recipe tailored to the infant's needs.

Measuring freeze-dried breast milk powder

What We Measure

Both baseline (liquid) milk and freeze-dried powder are analyzed, enabling precise fortification calculations. Each milk sample is analyzed using the FDA-cleared Miris Human Milk Analyzer (mid-infrared spectroscopy) to quantify four key macronutrients:

  • Total calories
  • Protein
  • Fat
  • Carbohydrate

The analysis report accompanies the returned freeze-dried milk and is also available electronically. Our clinical team reviews each report and uses the data to develop the individualized fortification recipe targeting the infant's prescribed caloric goals.

Accurate Measurement in Any Setting

Precise fortification is only as effective as the measurement that supports it. To ensure accuracy whether a baby is being fed at home or in the hospital, Milkify offers measurement kits designed to facilitate consistent, reliable reconstitution and fortification in both settings.

Evidence

Nutritional Retention

Freeze-drying preserves the macronutrients, micronutrients, and bioactive components that make breast milk uniquely valuable.

Preserved Components

Total fat & fatty acid profiles no significant change, including DHA, ARA, and EPA

Protein content no significant change in total protein

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) prebiotic composition unchanged

Lysozyme bactericidal enzyme retained

Leptin & adiponectin metabolic hormones preserved

Glycoproteins immune function maintained

Hepatocyte growth factor intestinal development factor preserved

Additional Findings

Antibodies (IgA, IgG, IgM) approximately 80% retention of immunoglobulins

Fat globule size decreased by freeze-drying, which may improve bioavailability

Shelf stability 3-year shelf life when processed and packaged by Milkify, verified by third-party testing

Based on published research including Sproat et al. (Journal of Perinatology, 2024).

What Milkify Medical Provides

Targeted and Customized Fortification

The recipe specifies the amount of freeze-dried powder (in tablespoons or grams) to add per volume of expressed milk to reach the provider-ordered caloric density. This data-driven approach supports precision in fortification rather than standardized assumptions.

Macronutrient Analysis Using the Miris HMA

Milkify uses the Miris Human Milk Analyzer to test both baseline frozen breast milk and freeze-dried powder. The macronutrient composition — calories, fat, protein, and carbohydrates — is used to create individualized fortification recipes.

GMP-Certified and FDA-Registered

FDA registered facility (registration #16969346312) and cGMP-certified process. Frozen milk is freeze-dried inside of a lyophilization pouch (SafeDry™ process), preventing cross-contamination, both from equipment and from milk from other clients.

Close Care-Team Collaboration

Milkify's medical team includes a neonatologist, neonatal nurse practitioner, and neonatal dietitian who are available to collaborate directly with your team throughout the process.
