Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about MOM fortification, safety, nutrition, and usage.
Program Fit
Is this done under medical supervision?
Yes. Milkify Medical's fortification service is designed to be used under provider supervision. During the intake process, Milkify collects provider information and collaborates with the care team to ensure transparency and clinical oversight throughout.
Which patients may be appropriate candidates?
MOM fortification may be considered for select infants including medically complex infants, late preterm infants, select surgical infants, infants requiring post-discharge nutrition, those with feeding intolerance or cow milk protein allergy, infants with faltering weight, and families who prefer an all-breast-milk diet. Candidacy is determined by the care team.
Safety and Handling
Is freeze-dried breast milk safe?
Milkify operates an FDA-registered food facility with SGS cGMP certification. The SafeDry™ process prevents milk from contacting equipment at every stage. However, freeze-drying is not a sterilization step — safety depends on source milk handling, keeping milk frozen until processing, contamination prevention during processing, and appropriate post-production controls.
Do you add anything to it?
No. Milkify does not add any ingredients, preservatives, or additives to the milk. The freeze-dried powder is 100% mother's own milk.
Does Milkify thaw milk?
No. Milk remains continuously frozen at the Milkify facility until it is converted to powder through the freeze-drying process. This prevents degradation associated with freeze-thaw cycling.
How does Milkify prevent cross-contamination?
Milkify's patented SafeDry™ process freeze-dries milk inside a sealed lyophilization pouch, preventing contact with equipment, trays, or utensils. Each bag is individually labeled and tracked. Milk is never pooled with other clients' milk. Powder packaging is performed in ISO 5 cleanroom workstations.
Shelf Life and Storage
How long does freeze-dried milk last?
Freeze-dried breast milk powder sealed in high-barrier mylar bags is shelf-stable for up to 3 years without refrigeration, protecting it from moisture, oxygen, UV light, and contamination.
Why does the shelf life depend on process and packaging?
Shelf life is tied to the freeze-drying process, water activity levels, and packaging integrity. Every order undergoes water activity testing after freeze-drying to confirm sufficiently low residual moisture, which prevents post-drying microbial growth during storage.
How long can opened pouches be used?
Once a pouch is opened, the powder should be used according to the instructions provided with your order. Proper handling and storage after opening helps maintain quality and safety. Contact Milkify's support team for specific guidance.
Nutrition and Analysis
Does freeze-drying preserve nutrients?
Research shows no significant change in total fat content and fatty acid profiles, protein content and proteomic profiles, human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), lysozyme activity, or glycoproteins after freeze-drying, with only slight reductions in certain immunoglobulins and vitamin C.
What does Miris analysis measure?
Milkify uses the Miris Human Milk Analyzer (HMA) to measure calories, fat, protein, and carbohydrates in both the baseline expressed milk and the resulting freeze-dried powder. This data is used to develop individualized fortification recipes.
Is the powder standardized?
No. Freeze-dried mother's own milk is not standardized for micronutrient content. Additional vitamin and mineral supplementation may be needed based on the clinical context. The powder reflects the composition of the individual mother's milk.
Using the Product
How is the recipe determined?
After analyzing both the baseline milk and the freeze-dried powder, Milkify develops custom mixing instructions that specify how much powder to add per bottle of expressed milk to reach the provider-ordered caloric density. The recipe is shared with both the family and the medical provider.
Can families do this without provider guidance?
No. Milkify Medical's fortification service is designed to be used under medical supervision. The process requires clinical input including a caloric goal ordered by the provider. Milkify collects provider information during the intake process and shares all data and instructions with the care team.
